Bro leaving and blog eats

My brother who’s been in town for the last few weeks had to finally head back to Seattle 8(. It was nice having him around for awhile. He is planning to move back to the area later this year. I’m really hoping his plans don’t change and he does officially move back. I have fun with him.

Last night DH and I headed to my moms to say our goodbyes. We took a trip to Sweet Frog to enjoy some fro yo.

I’ll miss that kid. But I’ll see him in a few weeks. He’s meeting me in LA to run in the Surf City half.

Today’s eats included many recipes I’ve found on my favorite blogs and I wanted to share them with you. One of the reasons I love reading other’s blogs is to find recipes such as the ones below. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I have made the Banana Bread and Sweet Potato wedges multiple times and they are delicious! Great snacks.

Its a new year!

Can you believe its already 2012?  2011 flew right by me.  Winter this year has been very mild also, so on NYE when it was a warm 55 degrees.. I was slightly confused.. its about 30 and snowing today so I guess it is winter after all.  Today is also my first day back at work.. boo.. but at least its a short work week.

So lets talk resolutions…

So yea I’d like to think that I have no changes to make in my life, but as I get older I find more ways I’d like to improve myself.  I read something last year that said you should make specfic goals in 4 different areas: personal, professional, financial, and health/fitness.  As simple as this is, I had never thought about categorizing my goals, and therefore I came up with a few generic things like.. lose weight, save money.

I also put together my 101 in 1001 last year.  Which I still plan to continue.. but I look at that as a revolving plan.  Our lives change, sometimes day to day, and so I think some goals I came up with in 2011, may just not make sense anymore.

My 2012 goal list:

Professional
do something I actually like(maybe even love)
  • My company is currently going through a transition.. making my job kinda crappy.. therefore I would like to make a job change either in the same company or a different.
  • Complete my MBA.. now this is semi-depenedent on the company I work for.  Currently I rely on tution reimbursement to help me pay for school.. so as long as that doesn’t change, then I can finish this year.
Personal
cherish my loved ones
  • Tell and show hubs how much I love him everyday
  • Send Sam a letter every other week/ postagram (sent my first letter of the year today!)
  • Send Sam at least one package a month
  • Stop biting my nails ( annoying childhood habit that I randomly restarted a year ago)
  • blog more often.. I want to blog, and I always plan on doing it, but then I get sidetracked.
Financial
Save $$$, put more into savings, stop spending carelessly
  • I have a shopping problem.. in 2012.. my goal is to only buy 1 clothing piece a month.. I don’t care what it is.. now no I wont by one underwear.. but my goal with this is to buy one nice article.  I don’t need a ton of clothes, but I want to start buying more pieces that are good quality, instead of a lot of things that arent so good in quality.
  • cut back on the grocery bill – how i manage to spend so much money on groceries.. i don’t know, but it needs to stop!
Nutrition/ Fitness
umm be awesome
  • run, run, and more running.. do 2 races a quarter this year.  I am already signed up for 1 in February and 2 in April
  • Cook at home more and eat out less.. Find some more key staple recipes that are quick and easy to prepare.
  • Try 1 new recipe a month
  • Run a 1/2 marathon

only 2 finals standing in my way

only 16 days left in the year!  december flew by super fast, and this weekend is just the beginning of the holiday celebrations.  I have 2 finals standing in my way (1 due sunday, and 1 due tuesday? maybe).  but i have some stuff working in my favor:

1. my finals are online so i can take them whenever (i guess this could also be a bad thing)

2. im pretty much finished with my work for the rest of the year, so i am working from home tomorrow to hopefully knock out 1 exam

things not working in my favor:

1. all the food and sugar around me (i’d rather be eating or baking something)

2. procrastination

tonight i am attending a study session for one of my exams.. i am hoping this will better prepare me to take at least one of the exams.

what i am looking forward to this weekend:

friday – run 3.5 miles, a final at some point.. dinner with the hubs (stuffing my face)

saturday – brunch with one of our favorite couples and there 1 year old.. I got him an awesome present!  I think its awesome – i’d want one. run (4 miles), holiday party at my friends later that night.

sunday – run 4.5? bday brunch for my friend – maybe a final

monday – finish a final? rest? run x.x? birthday happy hour for my girlfriend

wish me luck.  O I am also on the quest for the perfect gym bag.  I am currently eyeing this one from REI.


I have a bunch of crap when i got to the gym, and then all my dirty clothes, shoes when i leave.. so i need a bag that can hold all that.. currently i use a tote which works.. but isn’t that great..

Do you have a bag recommendation for me?

birthday festivities

it’s my birthday and i’m gonna eat if I want to..i’m just saying its gonna happen. i’m probably going to gain at least 1 pound this weekend, and guess what, I am pretty excited about it.

so yes i have been MIA, and I actually started a post to recount my adventures last week – but for some reason wordpress didn’t save my draft like i asked it to! apparently the blogger gods weren’t impressed by my stories of eating and puddle jumping.. I will retype that when I have some extra time. But for now.. its December! what.. November and October flew by.. well the entire last year did.. and this Sunday i will be turning another year older.. boo.. I actually don’t mind.. it sucks more when I realize that my hubby is younger and likes to remind me by calling me “Bum: oldilocks” – that’s straight from an IM conversation we had earlier this morning. If you are wondering why the tag name is Bum.. its not something I just made up.. that is an actual nickname for my hubby and what I have him renamed as on my gchat and even in my phone too!

So anyways. My birthday festivities start today. I am taking tomorrow off work to catch up on school work, and will hopefully have sometime to groom myself (ie pedicure, eyebrows, hair). So today my co-workers are taking me out for a nice carb-loaded lunch at an Italian restaurant. I was even surprised this morning with an Apple muffin from panera on my desk. At first I was like apple in my muffin? but it was declious.. I was even going to try to be good and only eat 1/2 … but umm.. it was gobbled. I couldn’t even take a pic in time..

OMg.. I could probably eat another one right now. Normally on my birthday – well for the past few years.. I’ve gotten a table at a club in DC.. and drank and danced the night away.. While I love doing that, I’m not really in the mood for that this year. Instead I’m all about the food. So this weekend is full of eating! Friday I am not sure what I will do.. maybe ill try to just be healthy at home. My saturday plans though include a girls dinner full of margaritas, guac and chips, and something huge to eat for dinner.. followed by cake and gift opening with my hubby love.. Sunday.. pancakes (duh!), lunch with the mom’s and then dinner with hubby love at one of our favorite dc restaurants..

I’m super excited.. O and I still have to do my Christmas decorations. That’ll be done in my free time, along with hw and studying (i have a final on the 10th!)

weekend recap

I took Friday off to hangout with my brother!  We started the day with a 4 mile run.. OMG, it was freezing!  I had my earband, gloves, and 2 tops on.. COLD.. and windy!  My brother wanted to stop at each mile and do squats, push ups and crunches.. he is crazy.. I didn’t eat anything before we left.. and I definitely felt the lack of energy 8(.   I did the three miles.. not too bad.. but struggled the 4th mile.. We finished though, and I felt ready to pass out.  Luckily my mom was already on breakfast and made a delicious omelet for both of us with peppers, onions, and jalapenos.. Mmm.. It was a much needed meal.  After that we ran some errands and did some shopping..

My brother was leaving for Seattle on Saturday. Unfortunately I had class Saturday morning so we had a goodbye dinner at Kobe’s Japanese Steakhouse with the family on Friday. We will see him again in a week for the actual goodbye, so this was just a fun dinner.

Afterwards we hung out at my place with my cousin and his girlfriend for a little bit.. nothing too exciting since I had class in the AM 8).. I said goodbye to my brother and then passed out in my bed at about 10:30 PM.. i was exhausted.

Saturday I went to class… till 1.. I had to stop by CVS, and decided to call Giant food to see if they had turkey hill egg nog yet for hubby love.. THey did!  I figured the guy I talked to could have been lying.. I went anyways and they had it!  Yayy.. surprise for hubs.. he loves this time of the year and I think its just because of the egg nog..

I wanted to nap at some point because later that night we were headed to the Maryland vs. Notre Dame football game, but I ran out of time.  We were headed to a tailgate at 5PM.. with the game starting at 7:30.. It was another cold night, but we got to hangout with friends we hadn’t seen in awhile so it was a good time.  We didn’t get home till 11:30ish.. and I passed out again.

Sunday I had a slow start.  I made hubs take Taj out early in the morning so I could sleep in.  I eventually got up and knew I wanted to run 2 miles.. so I started out with 2 slices of whole wheat with peanut butter and a banana on top.. Mmm.  I then decided to get back into the bed.. yes pure laziness.  I set an alarm for 11AM.. but didn’t get up until 12..  I forced myself to go for a run and I was proud that I did it!

I got home and made ham and cheese sandswhiches for hubs and I.. I added tomatoes and onions (and cucumbers on mine.. MMm).. Lunch was easy and yummy.  I ended my meal with a protein shake.  I then quickly showered and got dressed because I had plans to meet a friend for a quick hangout.. – I also haven’t seen her in awhile.  We just hung out at her place and chatted for lk 3 hours!  I had to scoot on out because I still had homework to do..

I ended up stopping at Wegmans on my way home for some fresh salmon for dinner.  And then I spent the next hour and half cooking.. not just for dinner.. but for the rest of the week lol.

Then I watched Once upon a time.. passed out shortly after.. so no I never did my homework.. I am a horrible student.. total slacker.. I know.

It was a great weekend though, I loved catching up with everyone, and the amazing food we had on Friday night, of which I ate leftovers on Saturday before we left to tailgate. Mmmm.

my friday personal training appointment kicked my butt. i arrived at the gym about 20 minutes early to do some cardio and ended up running on the treadmill for about 20 minutes. I asked my trainer earlier in the week how to improve my pace and she said to do interval training (run a little below pace, and then a little above pace.. alternate about every 2 minutes). That is exactly what I did. I ran between 4.6 and 5.7. I tired to push myself a little more and then slowed down when I started to get tired.

training involved leg and core work and man was it hard. I can definitely feel it today. I am having a hard time moving my entire body actually – as my arms are still hurting from my wednesday workout.

i did something different with my hair today! I did a side braid. It’s hard to do with my layering without random pieces sticking out, but I tried to stick those in to folds..

i started to feel really crappy when I got into work, and tried to eat my oatmeal right away. I think that helped. I started feeling better towards the afternoon. This chai tea definitely helped. mmm yummy.

we had a fire alarm go off at 2:30.. and I decided it was time to go home.. I know I am a slacker.. but I got some errands done, and missed the normal friday traffic mess. I enjoyed a delicious fun size kit kat bar while waiting at a light.

when i got home i relaxed in my bed and watched the new abc show ‘Once Upon A Time’. i thought it was okay, but i am willing to give it another chance.. as it seems they are still building the story line. i eventually made it to Wegmans and got groceries, including the ingredients to make these. I plan to make them later today. When I got back home and did some cleaning and then collapsed with hubs to watch ‘its a funny story’.. the movie was cute, different.

this morning Taj woke me up bright and early.. about 5:30.. my alarm was set for 6..boo.

I walked him in the yucky rain.. it’s freezing today and it’s supposed to snow here.. what..this means i can where my heavy down coat with the faux fur on the hood … right?

i hurried him back in and then quickly retreated back to my bed. I had to be ready by 7:30 to leave for class… boo… I had done some hw earlier in the week but decided to double check the class syllabus just to make sure i had done everything. that’s when i realized i had forgotten to answer some questions. i spent the next 30 minutes quickly throwing something together before jumping into the shower and then leaving.

I found my actual time from Sunday on the race site.

My actual time is 37:45 but the time I made it across the finish line was 39:23.. So I did a little better than I thought!

This weekend was a whirlwind of activities, including my first 5k! If you remember I was attending the Susan G. Komen Race for The Cure event here in Baltimore, MD. The event was held this past Sunday and it was freezing! If you know me, I like heat and cannot stand the cold. The race started at 8AM, and the temperature was about 40 degrees. No lie. I didn’t have much confidence in my ability to complete this race. I had thrown on a pair of heavy sweatpants and my north face sweatshirt on top of my running gear. I had everything hooked up: apps on my phone, headphones, heart rate monitor. I took my sweatpants off before leaving the car.. didn’t want to deal with them. The traffic at this event was insane. It made complete sense, but I didn’t factor that in and so we arrived and parked with only 10 minutes to get to the start line! We got over there quickly and I took my sweatshirt off 8(.

At this point I was really worried about what was going to happen next. I still wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to do this. I had never run in the cold! I knew breathing would be harder.  I had never run in a race before – what if someone pushed me over!!!.. at the last minute I pushed my way into the crowd and waited for the bell to ring to signal our start.. It all happened so fast. I was a good ways away from the start line and because of the big crowd it was hard to run at first.. I know I was running as I crossed the start line though.

My coworker had miss-spoken and told me there was only one real hill to worry about. But boy was he lying.. the first 2 miles were pretty hilly. I kept thinking – gzZzz another one. I got through the first 2 miles pretty easily. I did have a hard time breathing, but gave up on trying to correctly breath through my nose. The last mile, I started to feel a cramp in my side, but I was super motivated to finish. I kept telling myself, i’ve gotten so far.. and how proud of myself i already was.  

My Nike+ alerts were about .1 miles ahead because due to the fact I started a little behind the start line.  As soon as my alert told me I had reached my goal and I could see the finish line I was so happY!!  I started looking all around for hubs.. I didn’t see him.  I crossed the finish line and was so excited.. I tried to text hubs to see where he was, but he found me!!  I gave him a huge hug. I couldn’t believe I had done it!  I was slow and steady – but in the end finishing was all that mattered to me.  I am not sure of my official time.. but I did see the clock as I was crossing the finish line.. it said about 39:12.. exactly where I thought I would be.

After the race, it was time to get some eating on! I was warmed up from the run.. but the warmth quickly left my body. As we made our way back to the car.. we stopped into Panera and I grabbed a hot chocolate. We had plans to go to IHOP and feast on all-you-can-eat pancakes. I wasn’t that hungry though. But we went, I ate a couple – more hash browns.

I had such an amazing time at the race. Even though I did it by myself I still had a ton of fun. I knew hubs was at the finish line! I can’t wait to run another one. And now I am even more pumped to run a 10K. I think I am addicted! I read on other runners blogs that it becomes addicting, but I didn’t believe it till I finished the race yesterday.

Below are some stats from my Nike+. You can see that the route on the map continues after the 5k is complete.. but I was walking at that point.. back to the car. On the bottom chart you can see my pace was pretty much steady, except for the first 1k which included the wait time before the race started.. My goals for the next one (o yes I am doing another one.. maybe even in the next few weeks) are to improve my pace and time!
